What Conditions Enable Capable People to Consistently Access Their Best Thinking?
Exploring the conditions that shape how people access the capacities they already possess.
I research how context, demands, relationships, and recovery shape access to cognitive, attentional, emotional, and relational capacities people already possess.
This work is centered on Contextual Regulatory Access (CRA): the idea that having a capacity does not always mean being able to access it equally across contexts and conditions.
ACCESS vs CAPACITY
Different concepts. Both matter.
About
I’m an educator, researcher, and speaker who has spent more than two decades working across classrooms, leadership, alternative education, and international settings. My work has taken me through multiple countries, roles, and systems, but one theme has remained consistent: people often have far more capacity than they can reliably access under certain conditions.
That question now sits at the center of my doctoral research on Contextual Regulatory Access. I’m interested in the intersection of human functioning, relationships, occupational demands, and the environments we ask people to perform within. I bring a practitioner’s eye to research and a researcher’s curiosity back to practice; usually with a strong preference for asking better questions before offering simple solutions.
Speaking
I speak about the space between knowing and accessing; what happens when capable people cannot consistently reach the thinking, regulation, flexibility, or relational presence they normally possess. My talks bring together research, education, leadership, executive functioning, trauma-informed practice, and real-world experience. I aim to make complex ideas practical without flattening them into easy answers.
Research
My research explores a question that has followed me through classrooms, leadership roles, and years of working with people under pressure: why can someone know what to do, have the skills to do it, and still struggle to access those capacities in the moment? My work focuses on Contextual Regulatory Access (CRA) and the broader Occupational Regulatory Bandwidth (ORB) framework, examining how context, demands, relationships, and recovery shape access to cognitive, attentional, emotional, and relational capacities.
Research. Speaking. Collaboration. Conversation.
I’m always interested in thoughtful conversations about research, education, leadership, and the conditions that shape how people function under demand.
If you’re interested in speaking, research collaboration, conference participation, or simply want to connect around CRA, ORB, and related work, I’d be glad to hear from you.
